The bar chart illustrates the rates of urbanization across six regions worldwide from 1975 to 2020 and a forecast of the year 2050. Overall, there is a rise in the urban world population as the years pass almost universally, and how much each region contributes to this increase over the years is visualized.
First, it is evident that the urban world population starts out at just below 40% in the year 1975, and increases dramatically to almost 57% in 2020 and, finally predicted to reach approximately 70% by the year 2050. Africa and Asia are observed to have the least urbanization rates starting off at 25% in 1975, with a significant increase to 43% and just over 50% in the year 2020, and predicted to reach around 60% and two-thirds by 2050, respectively. North America, Latin America and, Europe contribute the maximum rates of urban settlements while the rate of increase is steady and minimal. By 2050, these numbers are forecast to cross 80% and reach around 90%, 88% and 83% for the respective regions.
In contrast, a different trend is observed in Oceania where the overall percentage in urbanization is well maintained around 70% although it suffered a slight downfall in the year 2020, being the only region where a decrease in the rates were demonstrated.
