The bar chart shows the average income from job and the cost of renting an apartment in Toronto for four different decades: 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.
Overall, it can be seen that at the beginning the salary was more than rent cost, but over the years, renting price go higher and in the last decade it became more expensive than income.
Focusing on the details, in the 1980s, people earn around $3000 per month, while they spent a bit more on rent, about $3400. Then in 1990s, the salary increased to almost $3500, and rent also rise up more sharply to around $4400. After that, in 2000s, the income stay almost same, and rent drop little, to under $3000, which was good.
However, in the 2010s, the rent price became crazy. It grow to $5000 per month, while the salary drop to $2500, which is only half. This mean many people cannot afford rent anymore. People who live in Toronto in 2010s need to spend almost all their income just on rent. Comparing to 1980s or 2000s, this is very big problem. It is clear that situation for many people is become harder and harder.
