The bar chart illustrates the figures of research students in 2005 studying six subjects: linguistics, psychology, natural sciences, engineering, programming, and mathematics. The bar chart is divided by gender.
Overall, there were more male students than female students in 2005. Male research students were prevalent in nearly all categories, except for linguistics, where females had a higher representation. The most popular subject for both genders was natural sciences. Similarly, psychology was noteworthy, with little difference between the genders; however, male students still outnumbered female students.
Mathematics was the least prominent subject for females; in contrast, it was one of the most notable subjects for males, with 200 students, compared to only 40 female students. The interest in engineering and programming between the genders was very polarized, with men having almost twice the number of women in both fields. This highlights significant gender differences in subject selection, particularly in STEM fields.
