The given bar chart illustrates the proportion of inhabitants living alone in five different age groups in America from 1850 to 2000.

Overall, there were more and more people living alone in the USA during this period. Additionally, the older Americans get, the larger percentage that they account for in the total population of the country.

In 1850, around 4 percent of the American population with the age of 37-54 lived alone. Citizens from 55 to 64 years old at that time accounted for 3 percent of the country’s population.

In the next 15 decades, the number of residents(37-46) who lived alone gradually increased to 7% of the American population in 2000. In 1900, people with the age from 27 to 36 started to increasingly live alone, and, in 2000, the percentage of them was 8%. 50 years later, youngsters(17-26) also began to live alone more. The figure of these people rose up to stand at 5% of the total number of Americans. Last but not least, 55 to 64 continued to be the major age range when people lived alone, when , in 2000 , its proportion was over 16%.
