The chart aboves gives an information about the contributions of three sectors to Sri Lanka’s gross domestic production (GDP) during 1980 to 2020.
Overall, the services sector experienced a steady growth from 1980 to 2020, while the industry sector contribution increased only in the first two decades then remaining stable until 2020. On the other hand, the agriculture sector witness a dramatic change during these years.
Initially, the agriculture sector dominated the contribution to Sri Lanka’s gross domestic product, accounted to approximately 65% from the total GDP. However, this contribution was steadily decreasing over time to around 15%, contributed the fewest in 2020.
In contrast with the agriculture’s, the service sector’s contribution to the GDP rose from about 20% to roughly 60% becoming the sector with the largest contribution in 2020.
Apart from these two sectors, the industry sector witnessed an increasing from the lowest contributing sector in 1980, with the percentage of around 15%, to approximately 20% in 2000 followed by stagnancy in the last two decades.
