Overall, rock music was quite popular among young adults aged 23 to 57 in the given year. Meanwhile, listeners aged 16-22 preferred mostly pop music, while older people over 58 mostly tended to listen to classical ones.
Rock recordings were the best-selling ones among listeners aged 23 to 57. The sales of rock music were higher than those of pop in the 23-31 age group, approximately 4 million and 3.5 million units. By contrast, the figures for jazz and classical music were lower at roughly 2.8 million and around 2.2 million, respectively. The figures for jazz and classical music were quite similar in 32- 45, and 46-57 age groups, each making up around 2.5 million. In contrast, pop was the less common type of music in these age groups.
With regard to the youngest and the oldest age segments, they had a marked interest in pop and classical music, respectively. Around 3.8 million rock recordings were purchased by those aged 16-22, compared to roughly 3 million by the oldest age category. The figures for jazz and classical music were around 2 million units in the youngest age group.
