The bar chart illustrates the proportion of accommodation that where owned and rented in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it is clear that there was a significant upward trend in homeownership, but it has a slight decrease at the end of the period. In contrast, the rented accommodation of households showed a downward trend, however it has a small increase in 2011.

Looking at the details, in 1918 the majority of households that live in rented apartments represented around 75%, while the rented accommodation was only about 22%. Between 1939 and 1953, owned and rented residence remained stable, accounting about 30% and 68% respectively. In the subsequent years, owned properties gradually increased, while rented declined and in 1971 the both trends were at the same level.

From 1981 to 2001 years, homeowners significantly rose to almost 70%, however it has a slight decrease in 2011 at approximately 62%. Whereas the rental housing dramatically decreased to 30% in 2001, although it has a weak growth path the end of the period.
