The bar chart below illustrates the proportion of workers in different profession fields (manufacturing, services, agriculture/fishing, construction and energy/water) in two years: 1841 and 2011.
Overall, it is clear that percentage of UK workforce in service industry during 2011 was the highest figure. Additionally, in 1841 manufacturing and services were the biggest industries combined, while energy/water was the lowest in both years.
Services in 2011 showed the biggest proportion, 81%, while in 1841 it was lower by 48%. Meanwhile, in 1841 services (33%) with manufacturing (36%) together were around 69%, it was the highest figure that year. By contrast, in 2011 percentage of people in manufacturing decreased dramatically to 9%.
In agriculture/fishing field difference in numbers was 21%: in 1841 it was 22% compared to only 1% in 2011. Construction also experienced lower percentages, 5% in the first year of the chart and 8% in the second one. The last work sector, energy and water, experienced a downfall and showed the lowest percentages in both years, 3% and 1%.
