Overall, over-grazing, deforestation, and over-cultivation are the main reasons why agricultural land worldwide is degraded. Europe had much higher proportion of degraded land than North-America and Oceania.
The pie chart shows that over-grazing by animals caused the land degradation with 35%. However, this is closely followed by deforestation and over cultivation with 30% and 28% respectively, with the remaining 7% being made up of other causes.
The main caused of land degradation in Europe were deforestation and over-grazing with 9.8% and 7.7% respectively. Similarly, the Oceania land were degraded due to over-grazing, whereas in North America, the degradation of land is due to over-cultivation and over-grazing.
