The graph shows the changing trend in car ownership in the UK at ten-year intervals from 1975 to 2005. Overall, car ownership increased steadily, and there was a dramatic increase in the number of people who had multiple cars over the period in question.
At the beginning of the period, in 1975, owning a car was uncommon in the UK; 45% of people had one car, and the figure for people without cars was just over 40%. Thereafter, single-car ownership dropped to its lowest point at around 35% before rising to its initial level in 2007, while the percentage of people who possessed no car decreased continually towards the end of the period.
As for the ownership of multiple cars, about 7% and 4% of people owned 2 cars and 3 cars in 1975, respectively. Thereafter, both figures underwent a dramatic increase towards the end of the period, in which the percentage of people with two cars reached just under 20%, while the figure for ownership of 3 cars rose to 10 % in 2005. Notably, the decrease in the percentage of households without a car corresponded with the increase in the ownership of multiple cars
