Overall, it can be observed that the quantity of doctors increased steadily across periods. In addition, the number of male doctors outweighed female doctors despite fluctuation. Furthermore, the majority of doctors were Australian compared with other nations.
Firstly, the number of doctors working in Australia was 300.000 in 1986 which over 55% were Australian practitioners while the rest were foreigners. Besides, the percentage of doctor’s gender witnessed a significant disparity with male occupying over a half while the proportion of female doctors was 45%. Furthermore, the number of practitioners in Australia increased rapidly from 300.000 to over double in the next decade. Regarding nationality, Australian practitioners witnessed a moderate oscillation from nearly 60% to a half in 1996 while the number of doctors from other countries increased slightly from 35% to 40%. This trend was similar with gender; there was a significant declined from 55% to over 45% in male while the percentage of female underwent a steep increased from 45% to 55%,the same rate of male doctors in the previous decade.
On the other hand, the last year of the period did not saw significant different trends without gender percentage. Specifically, the number of physicians in Australia continued to increase moderately from 640.000 to 800.000 in 2006 in which 55% of them were Australian and others came from different nations, remaining unchanged compared with the first year. In addition, the ratio of gender doctors witnessed a substantially fluctuate with above 50% male and nearly 48% female respectively.
