Overall, there was a consistent increase in the proportion of European residents of all age brackets, with a dramatic rise being seen in the fìgure for the 18-24 age group. Notably, the share of people belonging to the 45 and over age range had the lowest figures throughout the period.
Just under 5% of the 45 and over age group went to the gym in 1990, before growing significantly to about 20% twenty years later. A similar change, but to a greater extent, was witnessed in the figure for people falling into the 35 to 44 age bracket, at approximately 5% in the first year, after which it kept rising to roughly 40% in 2010.
The figure for residents in the 18-24 and 25-34 age range started at merely 10%, followed by a remarkable rise by about 20% in the first eight years. Subsequently, the share of the 18-24 age group surged potentially to peak at 60% and the percentage of the 25-34 age range also increased noticeably to just over 50% in 2010.
