The chart shows the number of Internet users amongst American girls this year and last year. As is perhaps to be expected, there is a higher proportion of Internet users among younger age groups than older age groups. This was true for both years but the trend was slightly less pronounced this year as Internet use rose significantly across all age groups.
Last year, there was a clear upward trend in the proportion of the female population who used the Internet as age increased. The percentage was at its highest with 12 to 15-year-Olds, Between the ages of 16 and 55, the percentage fell steadily, but from the age of 55 onwards the figures fluctuated. This is because some older people know how to use the Internet and some don’t. The percentage for women in the 65+ age group, for example, was less than a third of that for 46 to 55-year-olds.
Turning to this year, there was a marked peak in the proportion of Internet users for nearly all age groups of women. Most notably, the percentage of users in the 65+ age group nearly quadrupled and the percentage for the middle-aged groups also rose. There was a dramatic increase in the proportion of users in the 16 to 18-year-old age group reaching a plateau of nearly 100 per cent.
Overall, it can be said that, among the female population of the United States, Internet use has become more useful and in general more people are using it now than a year before.
