The chart illustrates the proportion of females in the age group 16-25 who played or watched six specific sports in 2000. It is clear that tennis had the highest figure for female viewers. In addition, more than a half of sports had the percentages of females who watched were higher than those who played.
In terms of the figure for females who watched sports , the proportion of viewers for tennis was the highest among six sports, at 60%. Basketball had the second figure , which was only 5% less than the figure for tennis. Gymnastics followed in third place at 20% which was a third of the percentage of female spectators for tennis and twice as high as that for golf. However, the figure for badminton and horse riding and racing were only 5%.
Turning to the proportion of females who played sports, basketball was the most popular sport for female players, accounted for 50% of total participating females. Following this, the percentages for tennis and golf were similar, at 30% while that for badminton was only 12%. Gymnastics and horse riding and racing had the lowest figures, at roughly 9% and 2% respectively.
