The bar chart displays the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the percentage of the households in rented accommodation demonstrated a downward trend, whereas the percentage of households in owned accommodation experienced an upward trend throughout the given period.
In 1918, roughly 80% of families used to rent accommodation, then their number decreased to approximately 70% in 1939, and remained the same until 1953. Later, it continued to fall, and in 1971, it reached 50% (the same as the number of owned accommodation). This downwards tendency continued for the following 30 years, and then (from 2001 to 2011) there was a slight increase (from around 30% to 35%).
In contrast, the households in owned accommodation had an upward trend. From 1918 to 1939, their number grew by 10% and stayed the same up to 1953. Later, the number increased sharply from slightly less than 30% to roughly 70% in 2001. However, the proportion then fell slightly to 65%. Even though the percentage of households in owned accommodation was bigger by the end of the period, it failed to beat the percentage of the households in rented accommodation at the beginning of the period.
