The bar chart illustrates the number of males and females enrolling in six artistic disciplines at a UK university in 2011.
Overall, it is apparent that the participation of male students outnumbered that of their counterparts, except for Art and Design. Additionally, Communication and Media Study was the most popular discipline for females, while the highest enrollment of males was in English Language and Literature, and both were the most common choices among other subjects.
To begin with the most popular subjects, Communication and Media Study projected the dominance of females’ participation over their counterparts, taking the lead with around 270 students, while it was the second most common subject for males, with just over 200 students taking this subject. As regards English language and Literature, although it was the second most popular choice for female students, with 250 students, the number of males studying this subject was ranked the first place , with about 230 students. In terms of Linguistics, the gap of the participation between males and females in this discipline was quite similar to that in Communication and Media Study, with nearly 250 females, compared to about 190 males.
Regarding Philosophy, the quantity of females embarking on this subject outnumbered the figure for males, with 150 students, triple the enrollment of their counterparts. Following closely to this, there were about 130 females taking History and Archeology. In contrast, the figure for males was nearly twice as high as that in Philosophy. According to Art and Design, it was the only discipline that showed the number of males studying it was almost more significant than that of females, with approximately 180 and about 160 respectively.
