The bar chart illustrates the gender distribution of students enrolled in six art-based programs at UK universities in 2011.
Overall, the data shows that female students were represented more than male students in most subjects, with the exception of Art and Design. The highest level of female participation was noted in Communication and Media Studies, while English Language and Literature had the largest number of male students.
From the chart, it is evident that the three subjects with the most student participation were Communication and Media Studies, English Language and Literature, and Linguistics. Female participation peaked at around 265 students, exceeding that of male students by approximately 45. Similarly, Linguistics recorded about 60 fewer male students compared to their female counterparts. The smallest gender gap was observed in the first subject listed, with a difference of just around 30 students between approximately 250 female students and about 230 male students.
The lowest student numbers were recorded in the remaining three subjects: Art and Design, History, and Philosophy. Art and Design had the highest representation of male students, totaling about 170, which was slightly higher than the female participation by roughly 20 students. Additionally, the largest disparity between genders was noted in Philosophy, where female engagement nearly tripled that of males, exceeding them by 100 students. Lastly, History had the fewest female students, totaling around 130, still surpassing the number of male participants by about 50.
