The given bar chart compares how students’ gender distribution at a UK university varied across six art-related subjects in 2011.
Overall, female students outnumbered their male counterparts in most subjects, except for Art & Design. Communication & Media Study had the highest female participants while English language & Literature attracted most male students.
Among the six subjects, Linguistics, English language & Literature, and Communication & Media Study had more enrollments. Specifically, Communication & Media Study had around 270 female students, approximately 60 more than the number of male students, making it the subject with the highest number of women participating. Similarly, Linguistics had an almost identical pattern of female dominance, with about 240 women and 190 men studying. Conversely, English language & Literature had the highest male proportion, with more than 225 participants, albeit still lower than 250 female students.
The gender difference was more pronounced in the other three subjects. Philosophy showed the largest gender discrepancy, with the number of female students tripling that of male counterparts, at 150 and 50 respectively. There was approximately 125 women and 75 men enrolling in History & Archeology. Art & Design, on the other hand, was the only subject where the number of male enrollments exceeded that of females, with around 170 men studying, compared to 155 women.
