The bar chart gives information about the results of a survey about city dwellers living in five different Australian cities’ coffee and tea purchasing and consumption habits in the last 4 weeks.
Overall, the percentage of people going to a café for coffee or tea in the last month was highest in all cities examined, with the exception of Adelaide, where buying instant coffee was slightly more popular. By contrast, buying fresh coffee was the least popular habit.
Looking at the most popular way of drinking coffee and tea, more than 60% of residents of Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart chose to go to a cafe during the last four-week period, followed by Brisbane with a figure of 55%. Adelaide had the lowest share, with slightly less than 50% opting for this option.
Turning to buying instant coffee, Adelaide was the only city where having instant coffee was more common than visiting a coffee shop, with nearly half of its residents purchasing instant coffee. In contrast, the figures for Brisbane and Hobart were just below 55%, while Sydney and Melbourne reported lower proportions, at about just north of 45% and approximately 48%, respectively.
As for the remaining category, it is important to note that in most cities, the share of people using instant coffee was double that of those buying fresh coffee, except for Sydney and Melbourne, where these two figures were relatively similar. Nearly half of those residing in Sydney and Melbourne purchased fresh coffee in the last 4 weeks, compared to approximately 38% of those residing in Hobart. Finally, Brisbane and Adelaide recorded the lowest figure, with only 34% in each city.
