The bar chart illustrates how tourists from five different countries travelled around New Zealand in 2004 using four types of transport: air, coach, car and ferry.
Overall, coaches and planes were the most commonly used forms of transport, while ferries were the least popular. It is also clear that transport choices varied between nationalities.
Japanese tourists mainly travelled by plane, with the figure just over 50, which was the highest on the chart. Coach travel was also popular among this group, at just under 50. However, far fewer Japanese visitors used cars and ferry travel was very uncommon. Korean tourists showed a similar pattern, although cars were their preferred option, used by almost 50 people, slightly more than air and coach travel.
British and German tourists followed very similar trends. In both cases, coaches were the most popular means of transport, at around 55 to 58. Air travel was the second most common, while car use was moderate. Ferries were used less often, at about 20. In contrast, Australians travelled by plane less than other groups, at around 25, but used coaches quite frequently. Their use of cars and ferries was average compared to the rest.
