The bar graph compares the prevalence of overweight Australians to total population by gender between 1980 and 2010. At a glance, the percentage of overweight males was consistently higher than the females during three decades and both of them had positive trends.
For male cohort, the share of overweight Australian men presented a substantial growth particularly after 90s. In 1980, the overweight men contributed to 40 percent to total male population in Australia and rose slightly to almost a half of the population in the next decade. Furthermore, the share raised significantly to about 65 percent in 2000 then declined at a low rate by five-percentage points to 60 percent in the end of the period.
In contrast, the trend of overweight status in Australian women depicted a relative stable growth for the same period. Began at 30 percent in 1980, the percentage of women in Australia who had overweight status gained to nearly 45 percent to total women population in 1990. The growth rate after 90s was lower than the previous year in which, in 2000, the contribution of overweight female in Australia only increased to approximately 52 percent then remain stagnant until the next decade.
