The table chart compare the amount of male and female students choosing different science subjects – Biology, Physics, and Computer science- in a university in 1992 and 2012.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that although the amount of female student increase over the 20-years period, the percentage of male student remained higher throughout the period. While the proportion of students choosing biology and computer science experienced significant changes, the figure for students choosing physics remained stable over the period.
Comparing students regarding their gender first, in the beginning the proportion of male students was about 65%, which was much higher than the amount of female students, with about 30%. Despite the fact that the proportion of female students increased by 2012, reaching 45%, the figure for male students remained higher over the period, even with its decline from 65% to 50%.
According to the chart, the proportion of students choosing biology was the highest in 1992, with about 65%. Although the figure declined dramatically, reaching about 40%, it stayed the highest among three subjects over the period. The proportion of students choosing computer science experienced significant increase from less than 10% in 1992 to about 25% in 2012. In contrast, the figure for students choosing physics experienced minor changes, declining from less than 25% to 20% , and remained stable over the period.
