Overall,there was a clear shifts from renting to home ownership gradually increased and eventually became the dominant form of accomodation.

Im 1918,the vast majority of households lived in rented homes,at around three quarters,whereas only a small proportion owned their homes.This pattern remained similsr in 1939,although the share of owner-occupied housing rose slightly.By 1953,renting was still more prevalent,but the gap between the two categories had narrowed.

From 1961 onwards,home ownership increased significantly.In that year , the percantages of owned and rented accomodation were almost equal.The upward trend continued,and by 1981,apporixmately 60% of households owned their homes,compared with about 40% who rented.

Ownership peaked in 2001 at just under 70%,while renting fell to its lowest point.However,in the final year shown,2001,there was a small decline in ownership,accompanied by a corresponding rise in renting.
