The pie charts illustrate the proportion of Irish students at a single university who spoke a language in addition to English, comparing data from 2000 and 2010.
Overall, it is clear that Spanish was the most popular language among students in both 2000 and 2010. Remarkably, the proportion of students who spoke Celtic remained constant across the decade, while those who spoke no additional language fell considerably.
Spanish experienced the most rise, from 30% in 2000 to 35% in 2010. In 2000, students who spoke two other languages and another language accounted for 10% and 15%, respectively. After a decade, each segments recorded an increase of 5%, reaching 15 and 20%, respectively.
Conversely, the proportion of students who spoke no other language experienced a substantial decrease by 10%, representing dramatic change across all categories. Students who spoke only French as an additional language to English showed a marginal decrease, from 15% in 2000 to 10% in 2010. The only exception in this chart was Celtic, which remained unchanged.
