Band 7+: the charts below show the percentage of second language classes taken by Australian secondary school students in two different cities in 2017.

The pie charts depict the proportion of Australian high school students who learned a second language in Melbourne and Sydney in the year 2017.

Overall, it can be seen that Mandarin was the highest learned language in both cities in the given year, and Italian was preferable in Melbourne.

In both Melbourne and Sydney, students showed their highest interest in learning Mandarin and the percentages were 40% and 45% respectively. Moreover, Japanese was the second highest language opted by the students in both cities and comprised 25% in Melbourne and 30% in Sydney.

In Sydney, the least preferred languages to learn were Indonesian and Italian, which comprised only 10% accumulatively as a whole, whereas, in Melbourne, the percentage of Italian and Indonesian language was 15% and 10% respectively. In addition, the other Language came in third position in Sydney and it was at 15%, while it was 10% in Melbourne and was equivalent to the Indonesian language percentage.
