The illustration shows the process through which olive oil is produced.
Overall, the procedure consists of seven consecutive steps, starting with the harvest of olives, followed by the initial preparation, and culminating in consumable olive oil. Notably, the process involves both human intervention and machine use.
To begin with, the farmers collect ripe olives from olive trees, which then undergo a rinsing step, where they are placed on a conveyor belt and are rinsed with cold water to remove all dirt and impurities. Next, these olives are smashed using a machine that also gets rid of all the olive stones. Following this, olive pastes – a bag with holes – are stacked on top of one another to prepare them for the next stage.
Here, olives pastes are compressed with a pressing machine, which are then sent to a centrifuge that separates oil from water, leaving only pure oil behind. Lastly, this oil is bottled, ready to be stored and sold.
