The process diagram illustrates the collection and treatment of the rainwater for use as drinking water in a town in Australia. Overall, the rainwater harvesting process consists of five main steps, namely collection, filtration, storage, treatment and distribution.
First and foremost, rainwater is collected from the rooftops of the houses and is directed to the drainage system. All the drain lines of each house are connected, and the combined pipeline is connected to the water filter unit. Then, the collected water is filtered through a filter unit to remove impurities and larger unwanted particles. Next, filtered water is collected in a larger storage tank, which contains input and output valves for water to enter and exit the tank.
After that, rainwater is pumped to the water treatment unit, which includes two chemical-containing compartments at the top of the water treatment tank. Then the rainwater is treated with chemicals before being supplied as drinking water. Finally, drinking water is distributed to the houses through a separate supply line.
