The diagram illustrates different stages in the life of the Monarch butterfly.
Overall, there are four main stages in its life cycle and takes about 4-5 weeks for reach the final stage.
The first two stages happen around Milkweed plants where eggs are laid. These eggs required from 4 to 7 days to turn into caterpillars. The caterpillars continue to live at these plants and consume leaves as a nutrient source for about 2 to 3 weeks. The developed caterpillar can reach approximately 2 centimeters in length.
After fully developed, they move to tree branches and spend their next 8 to 15 days laying still as chrysalis. After this period, the chrysalis transforms into adult butterfly, which can be 7 to 10 centimetres wide. The food of the Monarch butterfly is mainly nectar from flowers and their life span is usually around 2 to 4 weeks. At this time, they would continue to lay eggs, starting a new cycle.
