Writing task 1 Maps
The provided diagrams depict a comparison between two road tunnels in different Australian cities, highlighting the depth, length, geological conditions, construction period, cost, and traffic capacity.
At first look, we can notice that both tunnels were designed with two lanes in each direction. However, the second tunnel was deeper, longer, built in more challenging geological conditions, and significantly more expensive, despite being completed in a shorter time frame.
The first tunnel, constructed between 1986 and 1998, was 2.2 kilometres long and located just 1.5 meters below the ground. The project cost half a billion and accommodated four lanes of traffic.
By contrast, the second one, built from 2002 to 2006, extended 3.6 kilometres and reached a depth of 2.5 metres, and included six traffic lanes. Unlike the first, it was constructed through stone and clay and was completed in only four years, faster than twelve years required for the earlier one. This aspect is a reason for its much higher cost of approximately 1 billion.
