The bar chart presents the reasons why men and women chose to work from home in 2019, while the table illustrates the hours of home working by gender for the same year.
Overall, men and women had different reasons for choosing to work from home, and generally, men logged more hours from home.
Saving money was the primary reason for both men and women (45% and 42% respectively). Approximately one-fourth of men cited productivity as a reason, which was twice the percentage of women’s responses (24% and 11% respectively). Childcare was a more frequent reason for women, with almost a quarter citing it, in contrast to only 4% of men.
The table shows how many hours men and women worked from home during the year 2019. A large majority of men (81%) worked over 30 hours per week from home, contrasted with a minority of women (6%) doing similar hours. This pattern reversed in the under-ten-hour category, with nearly three-quarters of women working this amount, compared to just 3% of men. The 10-to-30-hour range showed less pronounced differences.
