The diagram depicts the procedure of formulating a formal academic essay that has been adopted by a certain university. Overall, the process is linear and involves six sequential steps comprising tutorials, research, and the preparation of multiple drafts.
The process starts with the first private tutorial where the task as well the topic is discussed with the tutor. The students are required to acquire a list of material for this session, such as books, articles, etc. The next step involves research, where they must not only expound literature resources and jot notes, but also involve in ground work to reinforce the research; this could include handing out questionnaires, seeking participants in a survey or even conducting interviews.
After this, the student may proceed to form the initial draft. This step entails two sub-steps. The first includes the organisation of the content and the preparation of a short outline ,while the second involves the actual formulation of the first draft, but the formal tone must be adhered to, avoiding colloquialism at all costs.
This is followed by either a second private tutorial or a group discussion, where the first draft is analysed to highlight areas which may require reconsideration, and advice on how to amplify the essay is provided. Following this, the student must revisit previously used material and take the suggestions offered on board, before proceeding to prepare the second draft. In the end, the student is required to meet the prerequisites of spelling check, bibliography compilation and attachment of a title page, before submitting the final draft. Students must be mindful to submit their essays before the assigned deadline.
