Illustrated on the diagram are the average admissions of three distinct programs over 4 decades starting from 1970.
Overall, it is clear that while science experienced a dramatic surge in popularity, music’s admission average fluctuated throughout the 40 year period. Meanwhile, arts had a rough but steady growth in successful applicants.
Regarding music, admissions were negligible in 1970. However, this figure witnessed an exponential growth, overtaking both science and arts in 1980. In spite the rapid growth, the percentage of admissions decreased to 75% in 1990. Music experienced a 25% increase in applicants, yet in 2010 the percentage plummeted to 65%.
There were several instances when arts and science intertwined with music respectively. Over the span of 3 decades, from 1970, science showed a steady increase of applicants, ultimately reaching 90% admissions until it was stagnant for another decade. Conversely, arts underwent a steady downward trend from 1970 to 1980. In 3 decades, starting from 1980, art saw an increase which culminated in 2010 reaching 80% in average applicants, albeit the plateaued phase from 1990 to 2000.
