From two pie charts shown above, we can conclude the difference between leisure activities preference in 1999 and 2009 for people living in the United States, whereas each year has its own preferred activity.
In 1999, we can see that 29% of people enjoyed walking more than other sport options, making it the top choice for the majority of people in the United States. Followed by soccer, aerobics and bicycling, they were also quite popular back then in 1999 and more than 10% of the US residents were involved in those three activities. However, swimming, camping, jogging, and yoga were the least favoured sports for them, especially for yoga, where only 5% of the US population practiced it.
Moving 10 years forward, which is in 2009, the trend shifted quite a bit in terms of its popularity numbers. One similar thing to observe is that walking and soccer remained as the most popular option for the US people to do on a daily basis, whereas the popularity increased by 2% for walking and 1% for soccer. On the other side, the trend was drastically shifting for swimming and bicycling, where the demand increased by 2 times to the point it reached 18%. As for the US citizens’ preference for aerobics, it dropped significantly by 8%, where a similar thing also happened for bicycling and jogging where their popularity dropped by 5% and 4%. Conversely, several US populations started to like camping and yoga, where participation rates climbed the ladder by 1% and 5%.
In conclusion, walking was the most popular recreational activity in the US as the trend remained stable for two different periods of time, where different trends can be observed for other activities.
