The line chart illustrates the rate of birth and death in New Zealand from 1901 to 2101.
Overall, the birth fluctuates, whereas death records a positive trend and is projected to overtake birth’s initial leading position by the end of the period.
In 1901, birth in the country accounted for 20000, meanwhile, death was half lower at 10000. From 1941 onwards, birth’s figure significantly peaked to around 65000 by 1961. Its trend then slightly declined to approximately 50000 in 1981 before it rebounded to 60000 by 2001. By 2021 forwards, the new birth is forecasted to mildly fall to above 40000 over eighty-year period of time until 2101.
On the other hand, the number of deaths moderately grew since the beginning to below 30000 by 2001. Next, it is projected to jump as its number meets the birth’s equal point at around 48000 in 2041. Since its significant increase, the trajectory will double to 60000 by 2061 before remaining relatively stable with the same value by the final year in 2101. This marks a shift where death will be surpassing birth, reversing the initial trend.
