The line chart illustrates how many African people used mobile and fixed-line phones between 1994 and 2004.
Overall, there was an increase in the number of telephone subscribers in both means of communication, with a much more significant rise being seen in the use of mobile phones. In addition, 2001 was the year that marked the point where fixed-line phones were surpassed by their mobile counterparts.
The percentage of mobile service subscribers started at 0.06%, after which it saw a considerable increase to exactly 3% in 2001. A similar change, but to a lesser extent, was seen in the figure for fixed-line services, which gradually grew from 1.7% to just under 3% in the first 7 years.
The proportion of African people using fixed-line phones continued to rise at the same rate, reaching only 3.1% in the last year. Meanwhile, a threefold increase was seen in the figure for mobile phones, which increased sharply to end the period at 8.8%.
