The line graph illustrates the number of jobs in manufacturing, agriculture, retail and healthcare in the US from 1960 to 2020. The number of jobs will be represented in millions and referred to as [m].
Overall, there are a few noticeable fluctuations. First of all, retail and healthcare experienced an upward trend over the whole period, whereas manufacturing fluctuated between increase and decrease. Secondly, it is clear that agriculture remained relatively stable throughout the decades.
In 1960, the number of positions in manufacturing accounted for 15m, outracing 2nd, 3rd and 4th categories. Nonetheless, this figure started to increase and grew to 20m in 1980. Additionally, between 1980 and 2020 it slightly declined to 12m.
A further analysis indicates that at the beginning of the period healthcare was the lowest sector, amounting to 4m. Moreover, after 20 years this number rose only by 1m, while by the end of the period it peaked at 16m. What is more, it is evident that, in 1960, agriculture and retail accounted for 6m. However, the next decades retail escalated to 15m, while agriculture plummeted to 3m.
