The line graph illustrates the figures for jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US from 1960 to 2020. Overall, it is clear that manufacturing initially recorded the highest figure, while the other categories were less common. However, towards the end of the period, retail and healthcare stood at the same level, thereby overtaking manufacturing. Moreover, agriculture remained the lowest among all jobs in the economy.
From 1960 to 1980, manufacturing was by far the most common and increased from 15 million to 20 million jobs. However, by 2020, the number of jobs in manufacturing substantially decreased to around 13 million and remained below healthcare and retail.
Furthermore, the figures for agriculture and retail initially displayed the same result at just over 5 million jobs. Nevertheless, retail significantly increased to around 16 million over the period, thereby overtaking manufacturing. Meanwhile, in 1980, agriculture fell to about 4 million jobs, while during the remaining period, the number of jobs in agriculture experienced a slight decrease and stood at about 2 million. In addition, throughout the entire period, healthcare grew steadily and rose to the same level as retail.
