The graph illustrates the proportion of the urban population in four Asian countries from 1970 to 2020, along with projections for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia show an upward trend, while the Philippines shows fluctuation over the period. Among the four nations, Indonesia has demonstrated the most substantial growth, whereas Thailand has shown a potential decrease.
To begin with, Malaysia’s figure stood at 30% in 1970. It then increased significantly over time and is projected to peak at over 80% by 2040. Admittedly, the country has the highest percentage of urban dwellers. In contrast, although Indonesia started with the lowest percentage of the population, approximately 15%, the urban population is projected to climb to almost 50%in 2040. Indonesia will have the second-highest growing population.
On the other hand, Thailand began with 18%, then showed an upward trend; finally, it will reach almost 40% by 2040. That figure would be the lowest increase in population in the city over the period. Moreover, the Philippines from 1970 to 1980, the percentage plateaued; after that, it slightly increased, then will reach to almost 50% in 2040.
