The graph illustrates about the proportions of people residing in urban areas in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia between the years 1970 to 2020 and also give forecasts for 2030 and 2040. Overall, there is an increase in urban residents in all countries with every passing year. The highest percentage of the public live in the city in Malaysia compared to other countries. Malaysia also has the highest predicted increase in city dwellers by 2040. Lowest rise is observed for Thailand.
To explain in detail, in 1970, only around 12% of people lived in cities in Indonesia which was the least proportion compared to other countries. Subsequently, there is a sudden spike in population density in cities in 2000 where the population was at nearly 25% and it rose up to 50% by 2020. From this, urban population in Indonesia surpassed Philippines and Thailand. It is shown to steadily move to 60% by 2040. Similarly, in Malaysia 1990 was the turning point and it witnessed a huge leap when more people migrated to the cities. To exemplify, from approximately 48% it increased to almost 75% by 2020. Moreover, by 2040 population peaks up to 80%.
In summary, people choosing to move into towns in constantly and steadily growing in numbers and is predicted to rise in the future as well.
