Overall, the percentage of Australians born in Asia increased substantially over the given time, whereas the figure for the UK decreased. Additionally, the figure for the other countries fluctuated before ending higher than its initial level. The overall proportion fell initially and then rose considerably.
The percentage of Australians born in Asia stood at around 3% in 1976 and then rose considerably to 15% by 2011, overtaking the UK’s share. By contrast, the proportion of people born in the UK declined steadily from approximately 15% to 5% over the same period. As for other parts of the world, the percentage of Australians born in other parts of the world began at around 10% and then fell to around 8% in 1986 before rising again to roughly 14% in 2011.
Finally, the overall share stood at almost 30% at the beginning, after which it dropped to 23% in 1986 and remained stable until 1991. It subsequently increased considerably to around 33% by the end of the period.
