The chart illustrates the percentage of the population living in cities in four Asian countries during 70 years.
It is clear that the percentage of people living in cities in Malaysia and Indonesia showed a gradual increase from 1970 to 2000 and then rose significantly wich is predicted to be it’s future trend, while this proportion in the Philippines and Thailand is going go up moderately from 1990 to 2040.
In 1970, the percentage of the people living in cities in the Philippines and Thailand started growing from almost 30% to 50% until 1990 and after that, the percentage of Thailand increased sharply and overtook the Philippines. It is predicted that the ratio of people living in cities in Thailand would reach to around 90% which is going to be the highest rate, while this percentage in Philippines will stand stead after a fluctuation in 2010.
Regarding Thailand and Indonesia, the poupluation of living in cities was about 14% and just under 20% at the begining of the period and after 30 years they reached to 30%. In 2000, after population living in cities in Indonesia overtook Thailand and went up enormously and is predicted to continue this trend until reaches 60%, when this proportion in Thailand increased dramatically in it is going to reach 40% at the end of the period.
