The line graph below illustrates how many good were delivered by four modes of transport in the UK from 1974 to 2002.

Overall, almost every mode of transport in the UK showed an upward trend in the goods develived with rail being the only exception. Meanwhile, the goods delivered by road remained the first place during the time and the number of goods transported by rail showed fluctuations.

Road was the most popular one in the UK throughout the period, the amount showed a slight increase from around 70 tonnes in 1974 to 80 tonnes in 1994, before rising significantly by 20 tonnes in the last time. The amount of goods delivered by water was lower, the figure started at 40 tonnes, and then the number soared to about 55 tonnes in 1982, the figure remained basically unchanged from 1982 to 1998, after which the figure grew dramatically to 65 tonnes in 2002.

By contrast, the amount of goods transported by rail remained stable in 40 tonnes between 1974 and 1978, followed by fluctuatious from 1978 to 2002 and ended up at 40 tonnes. The figure of pipeline started at the lowest point at about 5 tonnes and rose gradually to 21 from 1974 to 2002.
