In 1982, most of the students were from Malaysia, while in 2000, Indonesia had the most students in Australia.
The number of students from Malaysia stood at 5 thousand in 1982 and after a slight growth in the next year, remained almost steady at 10 thousand until 1994. The other three countries did not have any students in Australia in 1982. The number of students from Indonesia increased slowly in 1984. 1987 Saw a gradual and dramatic rise in the number of students from Singapore and Hong Kong, respectively, and reached at 10 thousand in 1985.
The number of students from Indonesia increased significantly from 1994 until 1998 when it peaked at 36 thousand in 1998. After that, it fluctuated for the next 2 years and finally reached approximately at 32 in 2000. On the other hand, the number of students from Hong Kong and Malaysia fluctuated between 1995 and 2000 and reached at 18 thousand. The number of students from Singapour rose sharply from 1995 to 1996 and steadily until 2000 when it reached just under 20 thousand.
