The line graph depicts data about how many people will learn three major languages in the world, namely English, Spanish, and Mandarin over a 10-year period starting from 2020.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is there will be remarkable upward trends in the number of students of all three languages over the period in question. Another significant feature is that English was the most popular language in 2020, and will continue to be so (the same) until 2030.
Looking at the details, as regards English, the number of students opting for this language started at approximately 550 million in 2020, and then a dramatic growth to 700 million was seen in that of English pupils from 2020 to 2024. Moreover, the year 2026 will witness a gradual decline to nearly 600 million in the number of people studying English. Then it is forecasted that the figure will go up sharply and will reach a peak of 750 million in 2030.
Furthermore, starting at above 200 million, which was 2 times as many as that of Mandarin pupils in 2020, the figure for Spanish students will go up steadily by approximately 150 million in 2026. Similarly, the number of Mandarin participants in the first year was 100 million and then will increase considerably to 350 million, which will equal that of Spanish learners. Between 2026 and 2030, Mandarin will be the second most common language instead of Spanish. Additionally, the figure for learners studying Spanish and Mandarin will be 500 million and 550 million, respectively at the end of the period.
