The graph demonstrates the number of crimes (in millions) namely car theft, house burglary, and street robbery in England and Wales between 1970 and 2005.
Overall, it is clear that car theft was the most common type of crime during that period. While the number of house burglaries fluctuated, the rate of street robbery remained relatively stable over the years.
To begin with, in 1970, around 0.4 million cars were stolen. This figure rose gradually and reached its first peak at 1.0 million in 1993. After that, there was a sharp increase and the number peaked at 1.6 million in 1995. However, in remaining years, the figure dropped significantly to around 1.0 million.
Regarding house burglary, the rate increased steeply from 0.2 million to 0.6 million during the first 10 years. This figure then leveled off for 5 years before experiencing a slight rise, reaching just over 0.7 million in 1990. The number remained stable until 1995, after which it dropped approximately 0.5 million by 2005. Turning to street robbery, which was the less common type of crime, the number remained quite stable at around 0.1 million until 1995. It then slightly increased to about 0.2 million in 2000 and stayed at that level until the end of the period.
