Overall, the number of rides taken on subways was overwhelmingly higher than buses.
Generally, subway ridership was dominant comparing to buses and tended to increase steadily over the 5-year period. Starting at more than 600 million rides in 2011, the subway rides witnessed a steady rise to its peak, which was about 750 million rides in 2015.
Buses wasn’t taken as many as subways. Despite showing considerable increase, bus ridership never surpassed subway ridership. It had about 420 million rides at the starting point, then fluctuated about 400 million to 500 million rides in the following years. In 2013, there was only about 400 million rides, which was the lowest number over the 5-year period. In contrast, this number showed a rapid rise to its peak, with 500 million rides in the year of 2014. But in 2015, bus ridership dropped to the same levels of 2012.
