The line graph compares the figure for daily travel by workers in UK using three different forms of transport over a period of 60 years.
Overall, the numbers of commuters using car and train show upward trend, while bus users see a downward trend throughout the period. Another striking feature is that car always emerges as the most popular means of transportation over the given period.
In 1970, around 5 million commuters opted for car, which was much higher than the figures for train and bus, at around 2 million and 4 million, respectively. Approximately 60 years later, the number of people who commuted by train increased slightly to around 3 million people. Meanwhile, the number of bus users saw a small decline to roughly 3.2 million people. Additionally, the figure for people driving to work rose gradually to around 7 million people in 2020.
In 2030, the prediction is that the number of commuters using car will go up dramatically to around 9 million people. In addition, after overtaking bus users, the figure for people choosing train is projected to grow significantly to around 5 million. By contrast, it is predicted that the number of workers opting for bus will decrease slightly to around 3 million people.
