The bar chart illustrates the amount of waste disposed of by three methods – landfill, burning and dumping in the sea – in a European country, between 2005 and 2008.
Overall, a large amount of waste was disposed of using the landfill method in 2005 and 2006 while the burning method was the least popular. However, the figure for dumping in the sea experienced an increase over the period.
In 2005, the amount of waste disposed of was exactly 2000 million tonnes, using landfill method. In contrast, just 900 million tonnes of waste were disposed of by burning and the figure for dumping in the sea was at 1200 million tonnes. Subsequently, there was a significant decrease in the use of the landfill method to 1600 million tonnes in 2006, before reaching 1200 million tonnes by 2008.
The figure for burning showed a slight rise to just below 1200 million tonnes in 2006 and then fell to approximately 850 million tonnes in 2008. Meanwhile, the figure for dumping in the sea went up rapidly to more than 1700 million tonnes by 2008.
