The line graph illustrates the number of overseas visitors travelling to the UK for 3 reasons between 1989 and 2009.
Overall, there were three main reasons: holiday, business and meeting friends or relatives, having different trends. Business and meeting reasons had downward trends, while the figure for holiday experienced an upward trend for the most part of the period.
At the beginning, the number of visitors going to the UK for meeting friends or relatives was 3.5 millions which was lower than that of business, 5 millions. In 1992, both of them reached the same figure, 5 million travellers but the reason for meeting had an increase whereas business had a significant decrease. After that, there continued to grow, the number of visitors who came to the UK for meeting friends and relatives gradually rose from 4 million in 1992 to 7 million in 2007. The business had a slight increase from 4 million to 6.5 million over 6 years before remaining stable until 2000. Next, it slightly increased to 8 million people in 2007. A similar trend was observed in meetings and business, as the figure underwent an upward trend to 6 million and 7 million at the end of the period, respectively.
In contrast, the number of travelers going to the UK for business was 6.5 million in 1989, remaining stable until 1992. It then hit the highest point at 9 million, before dramatically falling back to 6.5 million in 2004. The figure for business climbed again to 9 million visitors at the end of the period.
