The line graph illustrates the number of tourists who travelled to the UK for various purposes from 1989 to 2009.
Overall, all different purposes adhered to rising trends, albeit to varying degrees. It is also clear that holiday was the most common purpose for visitors, while the reverse was true for meeting friends and relatives.
In 1989, the UK attracted almost 6.5 million people who came here with the aim of relaxing. Then, this number rose to 9 million in 1994, witnessing a significant increase. After some fluctuations between 1994 and 2004, the figure followed the similar upward trend like the result in 1994 with 9 million international visitors.
Turning to business-related visits, it stood at 5 million and decreased to 4 million in 1994. Its number also experienced considerable rise, from 4 millions to 7 millions during the 10 year period. Meanwhile, the number of visitors who came to meet friends and relatives showed approximately 3.5 million in 1989. By 2004, this figure saw a gradual rise, reaching 7 million. However, this growth was not sustained and it dropped to 6 million in 2009.
